Responding to God’s Call

Sep 27, 2026  •  Pastor Pete Radford

What happens when God calls us to something that feels far beyond our reach? This message takes us on a journey through two powerful biblical encounters that reveal a truth we often overlook: God never calls us because we are sufficient. He calls us because He is. We walk alongside Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3, where God issues a staggering commission to lead an entire nation out of slavery. Moses responds with a Rolodex of excuses, and yet God does not argue with a single one of them. Instead, He simply says, 'I will be with you.' That response reframes everything. The call to accomplish the work of God rests not on our abilities but on His power and presence. We then move to the shores of the Sea of Galilee in Luke 5, where four fishermen encounter Jesus after a long, fruitless night on the water. A miraculous catch of fish leaves Peter on his knees, suddenly aware of exactly who is standing before him. And when Jesus says 'follow me,' they leave everything without asking for a five-year plan. Their obedience was not reckless. It was the only reasonable response to standing in the presence of the Son of God. Together, these two stories expose one of the most common patterns in our spiritual lives: we evaluate God's call through the lens of our own limitations, and in doing so, we end up trusting our own judgment more than the promises of God. The invitation here is to recognize that every excuse we offer is really a way of telling God that we know better. And that is a posture worth examining honestly.
