The Coming of the Spirit and Peter’s First Sermon
What if the moment we are living in right now is more significant than we realize? Acts chapter 2 pulls back the curtain on one of the most pivotal events in all of Scripture - the day of Pentecost - and what we find there has everything to do with how we live today. When the Holy Spirit descended on those 120 followers of Jesus, filling the room with the sound of a rushing wind, resting on each person as divided flames, and empowering them to praise God in languages they had never learned, it was not random. It was the fulfillment of an 800-year-old prophecy from the book of Joel. The apostle Peter stood before the astonished crowd and made an audacious claim: what you are witnessing right now is the beginning of the last days that God promised. That declaration is just as relevant to us as it was to those standing in Jerusalem that morning. We are not waiting for the last days to arrive - we are living in them. The question this raises for each of us is deeply personal: does that reality shape the way we spend our time, our energy, and our attention? When we understand the stage of the story we are in, the ordinary pressures of life do not disappear, but they are placed in an entirely different light.
