The Testing of Abraham’s Faith

Aug 2, 2026    Pastor Pete Radford

What if the hardest test of your life came with the answers already in hand? That is exactly the picture painted in Genesis 21 and 22, where the story of Abraham and Isaac unfolds as one of the most searching examinations of faith in all of Scripture. Before Abraham faces the unthinkable demand to offer his son Isaac, God quietly lays out three foundational truths in chapter 21: He is a faithful, promise-keeping God who never arrives late; He hears and provides for those in desperate need; and He is an ever-present source of all blessing. These are not just comforting ideas. They are the very answers we need when life stops making sense. The central question this passage presses into our hearts is whether we genuinely trust God with the things that matter most to us. When God blesses us with something deeply good, a relationship, a career, our health, our security, there is a subtle and dangerous drift that can happen where that gift quietly becomes an idol. Abraham's test on Mount Moriah strips that dynamic bare and forces us to ask whether our faith is real enough to survive the moment God asks for something back. This is a message that meets us wherever we are and invites us into a deeper, more honest walk with God.
